Ajay De is known for expressive charcoal drawings that capture people and everyday life with striking contrasts of light and shadow. Trained at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata and Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai, he developed a practice influenced by Japanese monochrome painting and calligraphy. His work often focuses on ordinary figures, including Kolkata’s rickshaw pullers, giving familiar urban subjects a strong sense of presence.
